The winds howled and rain pelted the windows all night. That meant another day when Robben Island ferries would be out of commission. Jenny kindly offered to plan our day and drive us around.
We started out at Buienverwachting Winery. Like many wineries in South Africa, this winery not only has a wine tasting room, but also a restaurant. There is also a coffee shop, a coffee roastery, and an artisan shop. We stopped at the coffee shop. I noticed "Chemex" on the menu. We ordered that. After waiting a bit, the waitress came by to say that it would be a bit longer since our coffee was being prepared in the roastery. The Chemex was delivered to the table with an explanation of the coffee used, saying it has been roasted just yesterday.
There was a break in the weather so we headed to Boulders Beach to see the penguin colony. We enjoyed seeing African penguins colony, especially the babies, who seem nearly as big as their parents but are fluffy brown, rather than a sleek black and white.
The weather really wasn't with us so we abandoned further outside activities. We went for lunch at Live Bait at the harbor in Kalk Bay. Jenny and I had calamari but Denis's fresh grilled sardines and ratatouille was the standout. We had hoped to see whales or seals but the weather was so bad, the fisherman, whose fish scraps attract the seals, hadn't gone out today because of the rough seas. And, we were told there hadn't been many whales yet.
We stopped at a German butcher on the way back to the house. I love local butchers and this one had lots of house made goods. I bought Maultaschen, a large ravioli, made with a meat, spinach, and parsley filling. Ought to be a good meal for one of our self-catering stays.
We are hoping for better weather tomorrow.
