We had spent a pretty chilly night. The temperatures dipped to 45 and the cottage had no visible source of heat except for three extra blankets we piled on top of ourselves. No heated bed pads here☹️
The cows are milked at the crack of dawn. Our cottage was the closest to the milking barn so we could hear them being herded in just before 6:30.
I checked the weather and while today was going to be nice, tomorrow it is expected to rain, with the heaviest rain about the time we were to drive the 2 hours to the airport. That didn't sound great to me so we decided to check out and drive the two hours later in the afternoon.
We had breakfast at the farm stall. Denis had farm baked scone with farm produced butter, jam, and clotted cream, very English. I had farm produced yogurt and museli with honey and locally sourced fruit. Both were a nice to start the day.
Denis found a walk/hike in Natures Valley. All Trails said it was easy but reviews talked about shear drops, using ropes, and being careful about the tides. How could this be easy? I talked to the son-in-law, chicken farmer who told me his 4 year old could hike it! On further investigation, his 4 year old gets to the scary rocks and turns around. So, that's what we did. Still, it was over 3 miles and just shy of 900 feet elevation. Luckily, when it is particularly steep, the trail has steps to help you along.
We got to the beach where the rocks are, a group that had just passed that way cautioned us against it. That was fine with me. The view from the turn around was lovely. Denis said it reminded him of Hawaii.
Along the way, we heard lots of birds and saw a few. They were all too far away or hidden by branches so I didn't get any photos. I did get photos of the tiny flowers. Many kinds of many colors.
When we got back to the beach, it had just been low tide. We hoped to find interesting sealife in the tidepools but it wasn't very exciting. Some anemones, some barnacles, that's about it.
We passed by the Farm Stall on the way out so we stopped for a quick sandwich lunch. It's amazing how busy they are with folks stopping for milkshakes, coffee, or lunch or to buy dairy, baked goods, or chicken products. I had put off trying Rooibos tea. It comes from a plant found in the mountains region around Capteown and us found on every drinks menu. One way to have it is a "red cappuccino." I can see its appeal but can't say I'm sorry I waited until nearly the last day to try one.
We drove the 2+ hours west back along the route we had come east on. We weren't sure where we'd stay, we'd heard Mosell Bay was nice but it was another 25 minutes so we decided to stop in George. It was time to find a last minute booking.
The guest house I found is in a nice neighborhood, not near the center of the city, which might have been a better choice 🙄. Denis was driving and pulled into what I thought was a sketchy neighborhood. He wouldn't turn around so I quickly booked just to get him to leave. He said it was a perfectly fine neighborhood but I wasn't so sure, especially with my cell phone and credit card visible.
We are in for the night. Through the wonders of the Internet, we were able to talk to Olivia. ❤️ Although the room as nice kitchen facilities including an induction burner, we'll have a picnic-style dinner with the leftover food from last night's farm stall purchases.
